Activity Based Working is a Cultural Value

When most people think about Activity Based Working (ABW), they think about workspace. They see it only as a design solution. While ABW is a design solution, there is much more to it than that.

Above all else, ABW is a cultural commitment to employee choice and flexibility, to the idea that people do their best work when they can manage their own time and energy. Effective ABW therefore requires a certain kind of leadership—open leadership—that is premised on high levels of trust, team self-organization, distributed decision making, and a general commitment to innovation.

At the Lab, we view the design aspects of ABW—multiple zones for multiple activity types, remote working options, flexible policies and team agreements—as a way to shape and reinforce an ABW cultural mindset. For us, ABW is a tool for designing culture. Get in touch to learn more!
